We got up early to drive over to the Glacier Lagoon for our Ice Cave tour. It was still dark but you could see the broken off pieces of the glacier floating in the lagoon. It was too dark to get a good shot, but still so beautiful!
We decided to go with Iceland Advice for our ice cave tour. We chose this one because it was a good amount of time, we could still walk on the glacier, and see ice caves. We absolutely loved it.
The timing was perfect, the sun was coming up just as we started our tour. If you choose this adventure, be sure to have sunglasses, the ash blowing in the wind really hurts the eyes! It was fun driving up in the hopped up van, we took pictures at every turn.
We got to get out at two different stops. One with black ice.
The other had recently collapsed, but the blue color was still amazing.
From there we drove the van back down the the Lagoon where we could clearly see now that the sun was up.
Then we hopped in our car and drove over to Diamond Beach, just across the road from the lagoon. The sun was setting already and made for awesome views. I don’t see how anyone could be right here and not walk over to the beach.
From here it was a long drive to our next resting point. Uthlid Cottages. We had hoped for good weather so we could see the Northern Lights as we sat in the hot tub. But once we left the beach, the snow started. As we drove back by our first days stops, we were so thankful we packed so much in, because today was colder, more windy and it was snowing! We stopped to get some energy drinks to get us through the long drive.
We got to the cabin and were starving. We found a little place that had just opened after their winter break, so their menu was limited. But the pizza they had hit the spot. Especially since our daughter was already tired of the Icelandic Hotdogs. And if we visit again int he warmer months, we might look into staying here. Skjol Camping, and restaurant. Delish! After our bellies were full, we sat in the hot tub hoping for a break in the clouds to see the lights, but no luck. We slept well, knowing the next day had a whole other set of adventures!
