It was time for our daughter Jenna to have her trip with us. She chose the Northern Lights as her main goal. So we set off planning the trip to try and optimize our chances. Iceland Air had the best flight option to Reykjavik, where we’d decided to start our trip. It was a short, direct flight of only 7.5 hours from Denver. We didn’t realize at the time, but watching the Aurora forecast we soon realized our first chance at seeing the Northern Lights would end up being on our early morning flight into Reykjavik.
My daughter and I of course started crying when we gazed upon the Lights outside our plane window. And we couldn’t even fathom how other passengers slept on through, or kept watching their movies unaware of the magic just outside the window. This proved to be a fantastic start to our trip, and even before we arrived, we were able to scratch off the bucket list item.
As a side note, Iceland Air offers a stopover option. It allows you to fly into Iceland for a few days stay, and then onto wherever you were intending to go. I was immensely bummed when I realized this as I had booked our trip with individual flights using skyscanner.com, a site that I like to use for flights and rental cars. But, when I checked the pricing for the stopover option, it turned out the way I booked it was cheapest. So make sure you check all your options before booking a stopover fare with Iceland Air.
